press The Mash-up Mecca: The Bootie SF Party
Around the 15th of every month in San Fransisco, the most musically interesting show in town is Bootie SF, a mash-up bootleg party. Since 2003, DJs Adrian and the Mysterious D have been hosting this DJ-extravaganza in which different songs are mashed together to form new songs. Complex Magazine named it best mash-up party in the US not only because of the diverse, racious crowd but because the DJs sample from an eclectic range of music from soul to classic rock to new wave to hip hop. While the music is generally sampled without regard to copyright, hence the bootleg moniker and pirate flag logo, we have to give a shout out to the spirit of the night. Mashing, remixing and combining genres, Bootie SF puts new forms of music on stage and creates new meaning out of old favorites and the best in new music. Check out their site, and if you are inspired by the idea of the mash-up, find some fellow artists on Indaba and load up the production console. - David
